When you think about what will happen next, you are making a prediction. You can make predictions about stories you read.
To make a good prediction, use details from the story you are reading.
- Think about what has happened so far.
- Think about what the characters have said and done.
Then use what you know about real life. Think about events from your life that are like events in the story.
Everything that happens in a story is the plot.
As I read a story, I think about the plot, or what is happening. The beginning of a story often introduces the characters and tells about the problem they face. When we read “Gus and Grandpa and the Two-Wheeled Bik,” Gus’s problem is that he can’t ride his two-wheeled bike without training wheels. The middle and end of the story tell how his Grandpa helps him solve that problem.
Think about what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Who are the characters and what is their problem? How do they deal with the problem and solve it? Identifying the events in the plot makes reading the story more enjoyable.
Characters -- who or what the story is about.
Setting - where and when a story takes place
As I read a story, I look for details that tell where and when the story takes place. For example, the words “in the winter” tell when the story takes place. The words “in the backyard” tell where the story takes place.
It is important to know the setting of a story. It helps you comprehend, or understand, what is happening in the story.
Main Idea and Details:
The most important idea of a story is the main idea. Other sentences tell about the main idea (details).
As I read a story, I think about what the story is mostly about. I pay attention to what the main character wants or needs. I look for that character’s problem or challenge. Then I look for details that tell me more about how the main character solves the problem or meets the challenge. Those details help me decide the main idea.
I know that sometimes the first sentence of a paragraph has the main idea. Details that tell about the main idea are usually found later in the paragraph.
